Best Local Coffee Shops in Thurston County
No day starts without a cup of coffee...
The Pacific Northwest is known for it’s excellent coffee brews and the Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater area is no slouch for good roasts! I’ve rounded up some of the absolute best local coffee shops in Thurston County for your reading (and sipping) pleasure.
An Olympia-staple since I’ve lived in the area, Dancing Goats Coffee Bar and Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters have been one of my favorite local coffee shops for many years. As for a little history, Dancing Goats opened in the late 80s as a local coffee bar serving Batdorf & Bronson roasts but not many years later, the owners of Dancing Goats purchased Batdorf & Bronson.
Depending on the location you frequented, you may have been at Dancing Goats or Batdorf & Bronson, but it was effectively the same business. This past year though, the two names were no more: the business officially became Dancing Goats Coffee.
So, why it my favorite? It’s simple: the coffee. The Dancing Goats Blend is simply the best tasting coffee blend I’ve ever had.

Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. started locally in 2005 as a wholesaler only, but a few short years later, it opened a humble retail coffee bar in a quiet side street in downtown Olympia. I often recall walking by to get a cup of Joe and there were people spilling out of the door.
In 2010, a second location is opened on the westside of Oly, in a cute coffee shack and along came a third location in the Wildwood neighborhood south of the Capitol. However, the shop I frequent the most is the expanded original location on 4th Avenue downtown Olympia.
Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. has amazing local coffee and also features some delicious local pastries (seriously, just try to resist). But, one of my favorite things about Olympia Coffee is the chill vibe it exudes. In fact, I like it so much it was where some of my favorite “professional” photos were captured!

Burial Grounds Coffee Collective
Burial Grounds Coffee Collective is a worker-owned café that roasts its own coffee, and provides a welcoming space for all who need a spot to sip, read, relax, or play a game. Burial Grounds started in 2010 and started roasting coffee in its current location in 2020.
But what really stands out about Burial Grounds is their pay it forward program. You can provide a few extra funds that will go towards other community members who cannot pay for a coffee, soft drink, or cup of soup to be able to enjoy a beverage and a place to be.
Where else in Olympia can you have a specialty cup of coffee called Rigor Mortis?! This place has a great Olympia vibe that also lives core Olympia values.
